The committee for the Institut Jacque Cartier having in charge the arrangements for the excursion to Canada next Thursday state that the excursionists will have an opportunity to visit the Quebec exposition and on the return trip may stop at Sherbrooke fair. The special train will leave at seven p.m.

50 years ago, 1961

Construction of a $200,000 addition to the Knapp Brothers Shoe Mfg. Corp. plant at 29 Lowell St is expected to start next week.

Lewiston Building Inspector Charles A. Buteau said last night that plans for the addition have been approved and that a building permit has been issued.

Some excavating has already been done. It will be necessary to drive pilings because of the subsoil. Buteau said the two-story brick addition will measure 194.4 by 102 feet.

25 years ago, 1986

Lewiston-Auburn officials working to bring a four-year University of Maine facility to the area Monday praised the naming of Robert L. Woodbury as chancellor of the university system.

“He has been very sensitive to the needs of Lewiston-Auburn ever since he has served as president of the University of Southern Maine,” said Rep. James R. Handy, D-Lewiston.

University of Maine trustees unanimously chose Woodbury, USM president since 1979, as president of the seven-campus system. He will receive a $96,000 salary, starting on Sept. 15.
