BETHEL — Irene flooded low lying sections of town Monday morning, making some roads impassable. Route 26 flooded near Telstar High School, and Route 2 toward Hanover was flooded as well, according to Oxford County dispatchers.

At around 1 a.m., farmer John Carter was forced to move more than 200 cows from a flooded field to a another field owned by Brian Blake. Carter said his cows waded through deep water with the help of friends including Brian Blake and Blake’s wife and two daughters.

On Monday morning Carter, who runs the Middle Intervale Farm, was resetting the sign to his farm stand, which was blown over by the wind. Much of the land he farms, which he said is mostly owned by the Shepley family, was still under several feet of water as it slowly drained into the Androscoggin River.

Carter said Blake was letting his cows graze uphill while the water level went down.

The playground in downtown Bethel was half under water.

At the Big Adventure Center, water flooded the lower parking lot and much of the mini golf course.

Paul Halle, who maintains the recreation center, said two picnic tables floated across the parking lot and water overflowed a covered bridge on the golf course. “It was a mess,” Halle said.

A muddy line on the green golf showed the high-water mark. Some of the course was still submerged at around noon Monday. Halle said he had a lot of cleaning up ahead of him.

Other roads in Oxford County were closed due to flooding. According to the Maine DOT website, Route 232 was closed in Rumford, as was a section of Andover Road.
