GORHAM — The USM Concert Band, conducted by Peter Martin, will present an  old-fashioned outdoor concert and picnic on Saturday, Sept. 24.

The program pays tribute to composer Leroy Anderson,  known for his short, humorous compositions.

The concert band will introduce today’s technology to Anderson’s “The Typewriter,” with the percussion section performing on laptop computers. And, it will perform Anderson’s well-known “Sandpaper Ballet,” an homage to vaudeville’s soft shoe-style dancing.

In addition, guest conductor Karina Babcock, USM School of Music alumna, will lead the band in Clare Grundman’s “Irish Rhapsody.” The concert band will also perform “An American Elegy,” written by Frank Ticheli in memory of those who died in Columbine; the Shostakovich Folk Dances; and traditional marches and patriotic music.

There will be a barbecue lunch at noon, “at old-fashioned prices,” with the free  concert starting at 1 p.m., rain or shine, at Corthell Hall. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.

This marks the ninth year the University of Southern Maine’s School of Music has closed out the summer with an outdoor concert. For more information, visit www.usm.maine.edu/music.
