A licensed Maine guide from Durham has been charged with taking Atlantic salmon from the Androscoggin River, along with other violations.
Jason Smith, 30, was summoned to court on charges of possessing fish taken during the closed season, illegal possession of Atlantic salmon and snagging fish.
According to a Maine Warden Service news release, the Department of Marine Resources received information that a man may have caught and killed an Atlantic salmon on the Androscoggin River.
Because the fish was reportedly taken from waters above the head of tide, Marine Resources officials contacted the Maine Warden Service.
Wardens began investigating the information in conjunction with DMR officers and special agents from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Smith was established as a suspect and a search warrant was executed at his home, according to the release. Wardens seized evidence from the house linking him to several fishing crimes and other violations.
Snagging is a method of angling in which fish are impaled by hooks without having to take bait. It’s illegal in most states, including Maine where it is prohibited with some exceptions.
The matter remained under investigation, according to the Warden Service.
