RUMFORD — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and River Valley Healthy Community Coalition will sponsor a traditional bean hole bean supper complete with beans cooked by the Rumford Firemen’s Relief Association, ham, cole slaw, bread and dessert at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Rumford Information Center on Route 2.

The rain or shine event will benefit Maine Harvest for Hunger, a statewide program of Cooperative Extension that encourages gardeners and farmers to donate high quality, excess produce to those with limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables. Proceeds from the supper will support the efforts of the Oxford County Maine Harvest for Hunger gardens located at the extension office in South Paris and at Hosmer Field in Rumford.

“The money will be used to buy seed and fertilizer and other yearly needs as well as to create a fund for necessary, long-term equipment such as additional refrigeration,” said Barbara Murphy, extension educator with Cooperative Extension. Demand for the produce has grown at both the South Paris and Rumford sites.

“We typically serve over 50 families every Tuesday evening,” said Sandy Witas, project coordinator, with the River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition.

The Maine Highland Fiddlers will be on hand to provide live entertainment for the afternoon. Informational displays will give the community a snapshot of the work being done in Oxford County, specifically in the River Valley. In addition to the bean dinner there will be a pie auction and native dry beans will be for sale.

Cost of the meal is $10 for adults and $6 for seniors 60-plus and children under 14. Pints will be available to go. Orders for the mill employees can be made by calling 357-7663. For more information or to purchase tickets, call Sandy Witas at 364-7408 or Barbara Murphy at 743-6329.
