LEWISTON — SeniorsPlus, the area agency on aging based, offers free (unless noted) classes for the older adult learner. The classes are designed to help people make informed choices about aging well, living independently and doing it all safely. Below are the classes this month at SeniorsPlus. All classes are held at the SeniorsPlus Education Center, 8 Falcon Road. For more information and to register, call SeniorsPlus at 1-800-427-1241.

Strength for Life: Sept. 6-Oct. 27, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Cost: $60, Instructor: Kelli Gilzow. An exercise program that will increase the strength of muscles, maintain bone strength and improve balance, coordination and flexibility. Suitable for any age, medical condition or current level of activity.

Estate Planning: Sept. 9, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Instructor: Karen Fuller, Financial Advisor. What should be considered when creating a will? What are the benefits of trusts and who needs one? Learn how to help reduce taxes on an estate.

Keep Moving with Arthritis: Sept. 9, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Instructor: Margaret Duffy, Arthritis Foundation. Don’t let arthritis get in the way of staying active. Learn the myths and truths about exercise.

Social Security Changes: Sept. 12, 10 to 11:30 a.m. Instructor: Robert Clark, Social Security Administration. 

AARP Safe Driving: Sept. 14, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost: $14 for non-AARP; $12 for AARP Members. Instructor: Tom Harvey. Program helps drivers adjust to age-related changes. Drivers 55 and older who complete this class are eligible for discounts on their auto insurance premiums for three years.

Thriving with a Hearing Loss: Sept. 21, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Instructor: Elissa Moran, Maine Center on Deafness. Learn about new technology, civil rights and self-advocacy.

Your Legal Rights: Debts, Reverse Mortgages, Predatory Lending: Sept. 27, 10 to 11 a.m. Instructor: Jill K. Randall, Esq., Maine LSE.

What Happy People Know: The Art & Science of Happiness: Sept. 27, 1 to 3 p.m. Instructor: Tammie Fowles Ph.D. Explore lessons taken from both ancient wisdom and modern science about what the happiest people know, do and believe, and how we too can achieve the greatest level of happiness.

When the Diagnosis is Parkinson’s: A Good Place to Start: Sept. 28, 10 to 11 a.m. Instructor: Lillian Scenna, MaineHealth Learning Resource Center. Explore the journey from symptoms to diagnosis for people with Parkinson’s disease and their family, caregivers and friends.

Communicating with Confidence with Your Doctors and Family: Sept. 28, 1 to 2:30 p.m. Instructor: Mary-Beth Taylor, Ph.D.
