RUMFORD — A young Peru man was arrested early Wednesday morning after police say he attacked, beat and kicked a young Norway woman in the face.

Thomas Hines Jr., 21, was found more than two hours after the 12:04 a.m. attack and charged with domestic violence assault against his 18-year-old ex-girlfriend, Sgt. Douglas Maifeld said early Wednesday afternoon.

Hines was released on $1,000 unsecured bail and will be arraigned on Nov. 8 in Rumford District Court.

Maifeld said the incident began after the victim and a friend left a residence and walked down a hill on Hancock Street.

When she heard a noise behind them, she turned and saw both Hines and another man, whom Maifeld didn’t identify.

Hines and the victim “began to argue,” Maifeld said.

“Then he grabbed her by the shoulders, at which time she slapped him in the face, and he pushed her to the ground and started kicking her in the face.”

Calls to 911 by people who heard the attack sent Rumford police to the scene, but the men and victim had left before they arrived.

However, the victim sought help from a nearby resident, who called 911. A dispatcher in Paris redirected police, along with Med-Care Ambulance, to the Hancock Street residence.

Maifeld said, “The victim alleged that she was kicked in the face by Hines and she had a gouge above her right eye, which I just confirmed, and it required four stitches.”
