FREEPORT, Maine (AP) — A Maine high school is cracking down on the use of cellphones during the school day and some parents question whether it will encourage students to use their phones on the sly.
Freeport High School now requires that digital devices be turned off during the school day because teachers found that allowing any cellphone use in school made it difficult to limit calling and texting.
Freeport Principal Bob Strong says the goal is to eliminate distractions.
The new policy requires that cell phones be turned off from 7:50 a.m. until the dismissal bell at 2:20 p.m.
The Portland Press Herald says that so far two students have been caught using their cellphones during the day. First-time violators will have their phones confiscated for the day.
