LEWISTON — The Lisa Giguere Scholarship Fund made awards to five local graduating high school seniors at a ceremony at the Lewiston Sun Journal office.
The fund was established in 2005 by Giguere’ s husband, Ralph Tuttle of Auburn, and the Sun Journal to encourage promising young journalists and to help them develop their talents and interests through higher education.
The recipients for 2011 are:
* Veronica Beaudoin of Lewiston High School, who is attending Boston University. Her parents are Ron and Maria Beaudoin.
* Amanda Cullen of St. Dominic Academy, who is attending the University of Nevada-Reno. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. Kevin Cullen of Lewiston.
* Brittany Martin of Lewiston High School, who is attending Boston University. Her parents are Dennis and Jeanne Martin.
Hannah Martin of Edward Little High School, who is attending Clark University. She is the daughter of Paul and Linda Martin.
* Kaila McCracken of St. Dominic Academy, who is attending Syracuse University. She is the daughter of Colleen McCracken of Auburn and Bruce McCracken, also of Auburn.
Lisa Giguere was a graduate of Lewiston High School and the University of Maine, and earned a master’s degree in New England studies from the University of Southern Maine. She worked as a reporter, editor and page designer at the Sun Journal for 30 years. She died of lung cancer in 2004 at the age of 52.
Tuttle presented the scholarships as family members and employees of the newspaper joined in congratulating the winners and honor Giguere’s life and career.
