So far, it’s a nice season to be a female athlete at the University of New England.

Less than two weeks into the campaign, the Biddeford school is 5-0 in field hockey and 3-0 in women’s soccer, with no small contributions from former high school stars in the region.

Freshman Marlie Mochamer of Farmington (Mt. Blue) and senior Alice Read of Auburn (Edward Little) collaborated for a second-half soccer goal Saturday. Read set up strikes by Mochamer and Rachel McDevitt to punctuate a 7-1 victory over Curry.

Read and Mochamer are two of eight different players to score a goal for the Nor’easters through the first three games.

UNE field hockey has tallied three one-goal victories, including two in overtime, in its sweltering start.

Saturday’s 4-2 triumph over Husson had a little more breathing room than usual. Credit senior Bree Tupper of Winthrop, who scored her team-high fourth goal of the season and her second straight game-winner.

Senior Michelle Oswald and sophomore Kelsea Beisaw, both of Jay, have scored two goals apiece for UNE. Oswald, a Mt. Blue product, also has registered one assist and one game-winning goal.

It is the first 5-0 start for the Nor’easters since 2004.

DOUBLE TROUBLE

Ben Russell of Farmington (Mt. Blue) scored two goals, including the second game-winner of his career, in Maine Maritime’s 3-0 home victory Wednesday over the University of Maine at Machias.

Russell, who also plays basketball at the Castine college, nailed a 30-yard shot in the first minute of the game. He later cleaned up a scramble in front of the cage for the Mariners (2-1).

RUNNING UP FRONT

Tri-county runners were among the leaders in the University of Maine at Farmington Invitational cross country meet Sept. 3.

Justin Fereshetian of Turner (Leavitt) finished fifth for the University of Maine at Presque Isle, completing the course in a time of 22:19. Fereshetian was the first runner to cross the finish line not representing the University of New England, which won the race.

Lewiston’s Faisal Abdillahi was 10th out of 64 men in the race for Saint Joseph’s College. Abdillahi transferred to the Monks after competing for Division I Wagner in New York last year.

NICK OF TIME

Two local players made major contributions to Division III football wins Saturday.

Nick Keene of Auburn (Edward Little) led Plymouth State with 13 solo tackles in a 19-13 victory over Mount Ida. One of those stops was a quarterback sack for an 11-yard loss.

Maine Maritime coach Chris McKenney celebrated his 50th victory at the school.
