LEWISTON — New England Celtic Arts will present Teada, one of Irish music’s leading exponents on the international world music stage, at the Franco American Heritage Center on Tuesday, Sept. 20.
The band will also take the stage at Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage on Wednesday, Sept. 21; and at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday Sept. 22.
Since landing a spot on the Irish TV show “Flosc” in 2001, Teada has evolved into frequent headliners at major music festivals throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Israel and Australia. In 2006, the band released its successful CD/DVD, “Inne Amarach,” by Gael Linn and Compass Records.
Teada, which means “strings” in the Irish language, revels in traditional Irish music, playing up its intricacies while preserving the energy of reels, jigs, hornpipes and other lesser-known tunes.
Oisen Mac Diarmada, fiddler and founder of the band, released a solo album, “Ar an bhFidil” (Green Linnet), in 2003; and was, subsequently, featured in the U.S. magazine Strings. He is also a regular solo performer, appearing recently as guest soloist with the Southern Georgia Symphony Orchestra.
Fellow band members include Paul Finn, button accordion; Damien Stenson, flute and whistles; Sean Mc Elwain, guitar and bouzouki; and Tristan Rosenstock, bodhran.
Appearing as a special guest will be legendary accordion player and singer Seamus Begley, one of the most popular Irish traditional musicians. Sharp-witted storytelling and high-energy performances are trademarks of this musician also known for pumping out tune after tune at all-night sessions.
Curtain is at 7 p.m. at the Franco center and Skye; 7:30 p.m. at Unity. Preshow jam sessions will start one hour prior to curtain at Skye and Unity. Tickets are $20 at the door. For reservations, call the Franco center at 783-1585, Skye at 562-4445 or UCCPA at 948-7469. The Franco center is at 46 Cedar St.; Skye is at 2 Highland Drive in Carthage; and UCCPA is at 42 Depot St., Unity.
