SOUTH PARIS — Fred H. McCormack Jr., 79, of Garfield Road, Auburn, died Monday, Sept. 12, at Maine Veterans’ Home following a long illness.

He was born in Caribou, Nov. 18, 1931, son of Fred H. Sr. and Augusta I. Richardson McCormack and was educated in Mapleton schools, graduating from Mapleton High School in 1950. Fred “Mac” graduated from Eastern Nazarene College and the University of Oklahoma. He furthered his studies, receiving master degrees from the University of Maine Orono and Boston University.

Fred served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He was an English teacher at Lewiston High School for 28 years, as well as teaching English and biology for adult education for 16 years. He mentored student teachers from Bates College and the University of Maine for many years and was advisor for several school student functions.

Fred owned and operated Shore Antiques for 25 years and was an avid collector as well. He enjoyed gardening, cooking and was an avid reader.

He was a member of the Lewiston Teachers’ Association and National Education Association.

Fred loved family times together and was extremely proud of his son’s, daughter-in-law’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments. He truly enjoyed his time spent at his homes on Taylor Pond in Auburn and Bradenton, Fla.

Surviving are two sons, David L. McCormack, USN (RET) of Harpswell and Donald L. McCormack, USAF and his wife, Diane, of Windham; a brother, Philip McCormack and his wife, Elaine, of Plympton, Mass.; five grandchildren, Joseph McCormack of Framingham, Mass., Erin McCormack of Brunswick, Jonathan McCormack of Brunswick, Gregory McCormack of Charleston, S.C., and Kaitlyn McCormack of Taunton, Mass.; special cousin, Lona King from Mapleton; his best friend and housemate of 30 years, Normand Jacques; and will be also deeply missed by his constant companion, the family dog, Amy.

He was predeceased by a son, Douglas L. McCormack; a daughter-in-law, Mary Beth McCormack; and two sisters, Estella Verity and Alda Holder.
