RUMFORD — The town boat launch on the Androscoggin River off Route 2 will soon get a new kiosk.

Although that wasn’t on Thursday night’s Board of Selectmen agenda, Selectman Jolene Lovejoy motioned that a critical circumstance existed.

Without explaining that, other than to say there was a time element involved, selectmen then approved that condition by a 4-0 vote. Selectman Brad Adley was absent.

Lovejoy motioned to add the discussion item to the agenda and it passed. She asked Jim Rinaldo from Rumford’s Economic Development Committee to explain the project.

Rinaldo said the Androscoggin River Watershed Council will install the kiosk, with credit also given to the Mahoosuc Land Trust. He said the Brookfield Renewable Energies power station at Pennacook Falls is funding the project, which is just beyond McDonald’s restaurant.

Once it’s installed, Rinaldo said Rumford could place information on the kiosk about the river and the access point. The kiosk will be about 8 feet wide and open on both sides.

He said the watershed council has been placing information kiosks along the river for 16 years while promoting its use.

“We’re trying to do the same thing down here to try to promote the river,” Rinaldo said.

Town Manager Carlo Puiia updated the board, saying the launch site will soon have a new entrance sign to replace the one that’s faded.

The board unanimously OK’d the project. Rinaldo was thanked for his efforts in getting the kiosk added to the site.

It should be installed before the Fall Foliage Paddle down the river from Hanover to Rumford on Saturday, Oct. 1.

That event is held by the watershed council, the Mahoosuc Land Trust and the River Valley Growth Council.
