ALBANY, N.Y. — The University of Maine took down Albany 31-15 in a football game Saturday night. Maine was led by Pushaun Brown who had 125 yards rushing and a score.

Maine got on the board first as Brown ran 33 yards for touchdown that completed a four-play, 87-yard drive with 12:24 left in the first quarter.

Maine kept Albany off the board when Darlos James intercepted an Albany pass  as the Great Danes were driving in Maine territory.

The Black Bears made  it 14-0 when Smith found Justin Perillo who pushed through a couple of Great Dane defenders for a TD  with 11:21 left in the second quarter. The touchdown completed a 5-play, 34-yard drive.

Smith lead Maine again just before halftime, finding Maurice McDonald in the back of the end zone sliding to make the catch.

Smith threw for 131 yards and two TDs in the first half while Brown ran for 105 yards on 15 carries. McDonald had four catches for 55 yards while Perillo also had four grabs for 47 yards.

Maine went on a 15-play, 64-yard drive to begin the second half, and Brian Harvey capped it with a 27-yard field goal with 7:44 left.

Albany got on the board with a Dillon Romaine 1-yard touchdown rush two minutes into the fourth and tried an onside kick, but Vinson Givans recovered it deep in Albany territory.

The Black Bears would get the touchdown back as Terrel Walker punched it in from two yards to cap a 5-play, 36-yard drive.

Albany made it 31-15 as it converted a two-point conversion after a Justin Peterson touchdown grab from Drew Smith.

Maine Maritime 21, UMass-Dartmouth 13

DARTMOUTH, Mass. — A pair of Nick Bourassa touchdowns was the difference as Maine Maritime Academy knocked off the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth 21-13 Saturday. The Mariners’ (2-0) captain from Jay rushed for 100 yards and the day’s final two scores.

The Corsairs (1-2) grabbed their only lead of the game, 13-6, late in the first half when Patrick Orlando punched in from the 1-yard line to cap an eight-play, 42-yard drive.

Late in the first half, Bourassa provided a 39-yard kickoff return to start the Mariners on their own 44. Four snaps later, Bourassa broke free for a 46-yard touchdown.

Bourassa rolled up exactly 100 yards on nine touches. He finished the game with 200 all-purpose yards, gaining 100-yards on three kickoff returns. Quarterback Matthew Rende picked up 79 yards on 27 keeps.

Corsairs’ quarterback Patrick Orlando finished the game with 12 completions and 91 yards on 32 attempts. He was sacked twice.

Amherst 2, Bates 0

AMHERST, Mass. — Sarah Duffy broke a scoreless tie in the 69th minute as Amherst earned a 2-0 decision over Bates in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon.

The Lord Jeffs’ (1-0) scored their first goal at 68:29 as Amanda Brisco sent a low cross into the box, finding a charging Duffy, who volleyed past the goalie and into the left side of the net.

Buoyed by their first score, Amherst struck again in the 83rd minute, with Jill Kochanek heading a Kathryn Nathan corner-kick into the right side of the goal.

With Amherst holding a 34-12 edge in shots, goalie Annie Burns finished with 13 saves for the Bobcats (0-2-1), while Allie Horwitz made four stops.

UMF 2, Maine Maritime 0

FARMINGTON — Kayla Tuttle factored in on both goals as the University of Maine at Farmington opened the North Atlantic Conference women’s soccer slate with a 2-0 victory over Maine Maritime on Saturday.

The Beavers (2-1-1) netted both goals in the first half. Tuttle set up the game-winning goal for Ava Amador in the 29th minute. Tuttle punched in an unassisted effort 11 minutes later to seal the day’s scoring.

Goalie Taylor O’Malley stopped six shots over the first 62 minutes for the Mariners (0-6), while teammate Kelsie Hilton of Monmouth stopped eight shots working the balance of the second half.

Goalie Beth Lebel recorded two saves for the shutout.

Men’s soccer

MMA 1, UMF 0

FARMINGTON — Abdullah Alkhayyat’s unassisted goal in the 11th minute was all of the offense Maine Maritime needed to defeat the University of Maine at Farmington, 1-0,  in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener for both teams on Saturday.

 Alkhayyat’s goal was his third of the season and his second game-winner in 2011. William Trace Lacour (Charlottesville, Va.) came up with three saves to preserve the Mariners (4-1-1, 1-0 NAC) 1-0 shutout of the Beavers (2-2, 0-1 NAC). The MMA whitewashing marks the fourth of the season for the Mariners.

Derek Riley stopped one of MMA’s four shots in the game. Farmington launched 11 shots at the MMA net to no avail.
