COLCHESTER, Vt. — Math experts from around the Northeast spent two days exploring the place of mathematics in crystals, graphs, voltage assignments and other areas. Professors from Smith, Williams, George Washington, UVM, Worcester Polytechnic and other institutions gave talks for the 80 participants during the Discrete Mathematics Days conference at Saint Michael’s College in Vermont, June 15-16.

Saint Michael’s College student James Coolidge, son of Janet LaFlamme of Windham and Herbert A. Coolidge of Poland, made a poster presentation on “Utilizing the Octet Truss in the Design of Lateral Transfer Retroreflectors.” Coolidge, a senior engineering major, received funding through a NASA grant through the Vermont Space Grant Consortium to carry out this project. Coolidge graduated from Cheverus High School before coming to Saint Michael’s.
