OXFORD — The Las Vegas casino hired to run one under construction in Oxford posted eight management-level positions Wednesday, most of them requiring experience at gambling businesses.
Silverton Casino President Craig Cavileer said the eight will make up the casino’s “executive team,” which will consist of a director of finance, director of food and beverage, director of gaming operations, director of information and technology, director of marketing, director of surveillance, facilities manager and human resources manager.
Several of the descriptions, including the gaming operations director and surveillance, require years of casino experience.
Cavileer said the website, oxfordcasinojobs.com, is part of a “viral” effort to find candidates that includes sites such as LinkedIn. “If we’re successful, great. If not, then we’ll start putting some of our headhunters on it.”
Cavileer said the casino will hire hundreds of people before it opens, but said he had “absolutely no idea” whether any top executives will come from Maine.
Silverton plans to fill the positions in the next eight to 10 weeks, and Cavileer said the casino will begin hiring other staff early next year.
He said that as of Wednesday afternoon, the casino had already received more than 100 inquiries about the management positions. He said he expects candidates from all over the country to apply. “Maine is a beautiful place to be,” he said.
“Certainly by the first quarter we’ll start doing a much more aggressive campaign for all different positions,” including guest services, restaurants, human resources and in the cage, the room where casinos keep cash and chips.
Since voters approved the Oxford casino on Route 26 in November 2010, its owner, Black Bear Development, has received thousands of letters and resumes from Mainers looking for jobs.
Black Bear expects to open the casino by next spring. The first phase will include a 65,000-square-foot gaming floor with a lounge and dining area. Other phases could depend on future casino development in Maine, but Black Bear has indicated plans to build a 200-room hotel and a spa, convention center and parking garage. The initial project presented last year puts the four-season gambling enterprise at $164 million.
