Police chief search

Issue: The town’s longtime police chief retired this summer. Interim Chief Jerry Hinton is in the seat now and Sabattus is looking for a new, full-time top officer.

The scoop: Fifty-six people applied for the job. The field has been narrowed to 12.

Up next: Initial interviews are being held at the end of September and second interviews in early October. A new chief could be in place by November.

Furbush Road repair

Issue: The Furbush Road Bridge needs to be either closed or repaired. It’s maintained by the Maine Turnpike Authority.

The scoop: People live on either side of the bridge — it would be a big inconvenience to close it. The town and selectmen are interested in keeping the bridge.

Up next: The MTA will shut it down for repairs next spring and reopen the bridge in the fall.

Odds and ends

Issue: Selectmen signed a two-year contract with Andrew Gilmore to be the next town manager.

Issue: They also approved police trading surplus weapons dropped off at the department for two new patrol rifles that officers can use.

Candidate deadline Monday

Issue: On November’s ballot, there is one open seat for selectmen, two open seats on the school board, six open seats on the charter commission and two open seats on the water district.

The scoop: Two people have taken out papers for selectmen; one for school board; four for charter commission; and seven for water district.

Up next: To get a name on the ballot, candidate papers are due at the town office by 4:30 p.m. Monday with between 25 and 100 signatures. Four charter commission and four water district candidates have already turned in papers.
