AUBURN — The Auburn Rec Middle School JV and Varsity football teams both improved their season records to 3-0 with recent wins.
The JV squad traveled to Poland Middle School and won 16-12.
Tyler Blanchard had a big day running the ball behind an offensive line led by Quinn Myrick, Brandon Marquis, Koby Stange, Hunter Knowlton and Daveon Brooks. Blanchard had TD runs of 38 and 64 yards. Auburn scored on both its extra point tries, with Noah Yarnevich throwing passes to Kyle Romero and Dillion Hummes.
Patrick Jacques led Poland’s offense at QB, scoring on a 68-yard scramble where he eluded several Falcon tacklers.
In the later varsity game, the Falcons traveled to Mt. Ararat and beat the Eagles, 8-2, in a defensive slugfest.
Both teams moved the ball between the 20-yard-lines, but the defensive units cam up with big stops to end drives.
Auburn Rec finally got on the scoreboard late in the third quarter when Brandon Varney rambled 32 yards up the middle and into the end zone. Key blocks on the play were delivered by Jack Coyne, Skylar Banr and Trace Poirier. Auburn made the 2-point conversion as Marshall Weiss hit Drew Lashua with a pass in the corner of the end zone.
The Falcons’ defense was strong, led by Shammond Thomas, Cole Butler, Issac Cote and Corey Gillespie. They have yet to give up any points in three games. Auburn took a safety with seconds to go to preserve the victory.
Auburn’s JV and varsity squads both host Mt. Blue Saturday at Walton Field beginning at 5:30 p.m. in key Western Maine Football League matchups.
