The Bangor Daily News is offering voluntary buyouts for up to 30 employees, with the possibility of layoffs later.
The News’ offer comes days after the Portland Press Herald said it would be cutting 40 jobs, first through buyouts, then layoffs.
Maine Public Radio says both papers are citing declining revenues due to a drop in advertising and competition from the Web.
Todd Benoit, the Bangor Daily News’ director of news and new media, tells public radio that it’s unlikely there will be a net loss of 30 people. He says 30 is the ceiling but not a goal.
