LIVERMORE FALLS — Local police and a state fire investigator were looking into a “suspicious” fire at a house at 13 Green St. late Friday afternoon.

Livermore Falls firefighter James Butler Jr. said firefighters were initially called to a report of smoke at the address, which is a residential area off Main Street.

Police officer Vern Stevens arrived first, Butler said, and reported the occupant was out of the house.

Butler and three firefighters in Engine 3 arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the basement, Butler said.

About 40 firefighters from Jay, Livermore Falls, Livermore, Wilton, Farmington, Leeds and Fayette responded to the first alarm at about 4:30 p.m.

“We discovered a small fire in the basement and we deemed it suspicious,” Butler said.

The fire was put out quickly, he said, and there was minimal damage.

State fire investigator Edward Hastings IV is working with the Livermore Falls Department to determine the cause, Butler said.

Butler said he did not know the name of the occupant of the house and referred to the Police Department.

Stevens was not available for comment Friday night.
