RUMFORD — The Rumford Historical Society held a fall welcoming potluck supper on Sept. 21 at the Rumford Point Congregational Church. The guest of honor was William (Bill) Weston of Rumford Center.

Weston is the former president of the society for many times over the past years. Weston’s achievements were highlighted by Mrs. Jean Hersey, currently a resident at Schooner Estates of Auburn, and longtime friend and Historical Society colleague of Weston. She emphasized Bill’s role not only an active, working participant, but also as a catalyst for developing the Lufkin School into its museum status, and the advancement of the archives as a storage facility for the records of the town.

The president of the society, Jane Peterson, presented Weston with a plaque honoring his dedication and service to the society, and its preservation of the Town of Rumford’s historical past.

Following the meeting, the attendees were given a brief history of the church and unusual trompe l’oeil frescoes by church trustee Harrison Burns and president Jane Peterson. A tour of the sanctuary where the paintings adorn the walls and aspe was provided.
