BRUNSWICK, Maine (AP) — Police have charged the father of a 2-year-old discovered drinking beer in his father’s room at the Tedford Housing family shelter in Brunswick, Maine.

Deputy Police Chief Marc Hagan said the child was taken Wednesday to a hospital for observation, and that the father was taken to a different hospital.

Hagan said police visited the shelter after someone saw the boy drinking beer. He says officers had to use force to restrain and handcuff the father, 35-year-old Shane Sawler, who received a summons Thursday for endangering the welfare of a child.

The Times Record says police contacted the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, and the boy’s mother was with the child at the hospital.
