AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — The company in line to build a racetrack casino in southern Maine if it’s approved by voters has loaned the campaign $780,000.

According to documents filed with the state ethics commission, Ocean Properties Ltd. of Portsmouth, N.H., is listed as the sole contributor to the Putting Maine to Work ballot question committee, which supports approval of the racino in Biddeford on Nov. 8.

The Portland Press Herald says Ocean Properties also loaned the committee more than $400,000 to pay signature-gathering to put the measure on the ballot.

The ballot question is one of two gambling referendums on the statewide ballot. One would establish racinos in Calais and Biddeford, while the other seeks approval for a Lewiston casino.
