AUBURN — The Tibor and Anna Doby Veteran Support Fund recently made $118,907 in grants to seven Maine agencies providing support to rural veterans and their families. Among the grantees is Community Concepts, Inc., Auburn, to provide transportation services to rural veterans for medical appointments, mental health care and social services.

Other awards went to Pine Tree Legal Assistance, based in Portland; Piscataquis Regional YMCA, Dover-Foxcroft; NAMI Maine, Augusta; Washington Hancock Community Agency, Ellsworth; and Northern Maine Development Commission, Caribou.

Tibor and Anna Doby escaped the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Through the trials they endured before being granted political asylum in the U.S., they came to know firsthand the devastating effects of war. Over time the couple developed an interest in American soldiers who served in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. Through their estate, they have provided support to Maine veterans and their families.
