100 years ago, 1911
Shortly after 10:30 o’clock last evening, the body of a man found horribly mangled between the tracks of the Maine Central Railroad below Crowley’s Junction was identified as that of Alvin Winchester Small, a farmer living in Lisbon Falls. Identification was made by Eldridge Small, a nephew of the dead man. E. C. Small, a brother of the deceased, is not fully satisfied that his brother’s death was due to an accident and fears foul play.
50 years ago, 1961
A new fire escape being constructed at the Healy Asylum, 81 Ash St., Lewiston, will give direct access to the outside from the small children’s nursery. It is being built to replace an old, defective fire escape.

The state jail inspector has told Androscoggin County officials designs for their new juvenile jail, now under construction, fall short of some state requirements, but officials say corrections can be made without slowing down the progress of the building.
Inspector Ralph Nichols and some county officials on Friday reviewed a list of 10 recommendations made by the Department of Corrections to keep the juvenile jail within state guidelines.
