DURHAM — A 24 year-old man was killed Saturday night when his motorcycle was struck by another vehicle on Route 136.
William Harris of Durham was traveling south on Route 136 when he was struck by a car driven by Michael Matczak, 18, of North Kingstown, R.I., according to a news release distributed by the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department. Matczak was passing other vehicles and did not see Harris’ motorcycle, police said.
Harris was pronounced dead at the scene.
The collision occurred between Stackpole and Snow roads just before 7 p.m.
Matczak and a passenger riding in his vehicle were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for treatment.
The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department was investigating the accident. Officers closed Route 136 through Durham for three hours while officers from the Lewiston Police Department reconstructed the accident.
Witnesses driving along Route 136 said they were passed by two motorcycles traveling south on Route 136. They turned a corner seconds later and came upon the accident, which involved one of the motorcycles and a black car.
The first motorcycle had two riders, a male and a female, Daniel Bourgoin said. The second had a lone male rider.
Carol Bourgoin said they traveled another quarter-mile and came upon the accident scene, with the single-rider’s motorcycle on the ground.
