RUMFORD — Maybe Matt Hosie was right. Maybe anyone could have run through the hole his offensive line gave him on Mountain Valley’s first play from scrimmage against Greely Saturday night.

But not many could have provided Hosie’s finishing kick 89 yards to the end zone.

Hosie’s run set the tone, and then his 68-yard touchdown and the Falcon defense provided the finishing kick in the second half in a 35-7 victory at Chet Bulger Field.

Hosie, who added a 25-yard touchdown catch, finished with 207 rushing yards on 13 carries to lead a running game that piled up 414 yards. Kyle Duguay (18 carries, 68 yards, TD), Izaak Mills (16 carries, 58 yards, TD) and even senior lineman Ryan Glover got in on the fun.

“It was a ’21 trap,'” Hosie said of his first scoring run, which gave the Falcons a quick 7-0 lead. “I owe it all to the line. They were low. They were hard. Anybody could have ran through that hole.”

Greely, which came into the game with a five-game winning streak, answered with a long touchdown of its own when Mike Leeman took a quick out pass from Drew Hodge and ran down the right sideline untouched for a 53-yard TD that tied the game.

Mountain Valley (6-1) decided enough was enough with the big plays and went on two long scoring drives.

The first was a 14-play, 58-yard drive to take the lead for good on Duguay’s 3-yard run with 4:01 left in the first quarter.

After Greely (5-2) went three-and-out, the Falcons pieced together an 18-play, 76-yard march that nearly stalled after the Rangers dropped Duguay for losses on back-to-back runs.

On 4th and 16 from the 25, QB Zach Radcliffe dropped back to pass, drew the rush 10 yards into the backfield and dropped a screen pass over the middle to Hosie. After setting up his blockers and weaving through some traffic near the 20, Hosie had nothing but blue shirts in front of him to escort him to the end zone for a 21-7 lead.

“I knew we had to come up big,” Hosie said. “I knew I had to get to that first down marker, and once I turned around, it was open field after a couple of cuts.”

The Rangers still had a chance to make things interesting late in the first half when they drove to the Falcon 14. A holding call on third down nullified a run by Leeman that would have made it 1st and goal. On the next play, Devon Hamel sacked Hodge for a 7-yard loss. Jacob Theriault then intercepted Hodge on 4th and long.

The Falcons made up for a fumble on their opening drive of the second half when Taylor Carey blocked a punt that Isaac Roberts recovered at Greely’s 8. Two plays later, Mills ran it in from three yards to make it 28-7.

After some struggles with Greely’s triple option in  the first half, Mountain Valley made some adjustments and shut down the run in the second half. Greely finished with 18 net rushing yards, -2 in the second half.

“It depended what side they were running, but we were going with end-QB outside contain,” Hamel said. “We adjusted because (Hodge) got used to me being in there. He started pitching it earlier, so I started going after the pitch man and that helped a lot.””

“We’ve been working hard on the option,” Mountain Valley coach Jim Aylward said. “We didn’t want the fullback to get good yards. Every time that he didn’t break a 10-yard run, we felt good. We put the quarterback in a position to make him pitter-patter his feet a lot tonight deciding what he wanted to do with the ball.”

Theriault’s second interception of the game set up the Falcons’ final score, Hosie’s 68-yard run, late in the third quarter.

“We didn’t play well all night. We played well at times,” Aylward said. “I thought we played lousy from about mid-first quarter on in the first half. I thought we played better in the second half.”
