RUMFORD — Mountain Valley High School Principal Matt Gilbert kicked off a school assembly with a thank-you to the students for participating in the day’s activities.

On Oct. 12, the freshmen toured Region 9 School of Applied Technology, sophomores and juniors took the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) and seniors attended seminars on writing college essays, applying for college and obtaining financial aid.

Gilbert then called students to the stage who scored a three or higher on the Advanced Placement (A P) exams during the previous May. The  exams are graded on a score of one to five. Often colleges give credit for scores of three or higher.

The students included Andrea Benya, English language and composition; Katie Billings, U.S. history and English language and composition; Tyler Daigle, U.S. history; Cassandra Dyke, English language and composition; Mercedes Gurney, U.S. history and English language and composition; Nicholas Hamel, U.S. history and English language and composition; Rebecca Maifeld, English language and composition; Alex Parent, U.S. history and English language and composition; Cody Smith, U.S. history; Noah Tanguay-Collins, English language and composition; and Erich Zurhorst, English language and composition.

Gilbert said, “This represents 16 college classes completed without starting your first year of college. Your parents will appreciate not having to pay for those credits when you get to your selected college.”

James Aylward teaches AP English language and composition and Christopher Carver teaches AP U.S. history.

Students  may select from a wide range of AP courses, including English language and composition, English literature, U. S. history, European history, calculus, biology and physics.
