LISBON — Still on cloud nine from a victory in the conference championship game, Lisbon set an auspicious goal of scoring in the opening five minutes of its playoff matchup against Waynflete.
“That was our goal, the first five,” wing Angel Strout said. “We wanted to set the tone.”
The Greyhounds set the tone just fine, missing their target by a measly two seconds and continuing the offensive barrage with four more goals over the next 55 minutes to earn a 5-0 Class C quarterfinal victory over the Flyers, their first in as long as anyone on the team or the coaching staff can recall.
“We were so excited to have the chance,” Olivia Harrington said. “Since we won MVCs, we had a lot of confidence in ourselves, and we knew we could do it.”
“We didn’t really know what to expect from them, since we don’t play them, and we were a little bit nervous,” Strout said.
Those nerves disappeared quickly as Harrington set up Hanna Jordan for the game’s first tally 5:02 into the contest.
“It’s the playoffs, and you never know what you’re going to see from the other team,” Lisbon coach Julie Wescott said. “We just wanted the girls to play to their potential. we have to be ready for the best the other teams are going to throw at us.”
Despite the score, Waynflete stuck with Lisbon through most of the game in pressure, shots and penalty corners. The Flyers just couldn’t finish.
“Our fouls killed us,” Waynflete coach Kelly Hoffman said. “If we can’t maintain possession of the ball with skill and consistency, then we’re not going to have the chance to win games. Lisbon played well, and today was just not a good day for us.”
Less than 15 minutes later, with 10:28 to play in the opening half, the Greyhounds struck again as Lindsey Whitney fired a shot through traffic from the right side of the cage, capping a furious barrage of shots on Waynflete keeper Kailina Mills, three of which the Flyers’ goalie stopped. Bailey Cutler tacked on another 4:03 before the half ended after a Strout penalty corner from the left side of the cage.
The passing was great out there; we talked well,” Strout said. “We talked. We did the little things like we’ve been doing in practice.”
“We like to get everyone involved. It’s not just one or two players carrying the load,” Wescott said. “Even at points, some of the defenders will carry the ball. The girls all trust each other.”
Lisbon began the second half with fervor, blasting another early goal past Mills, this one 5:01 into the stanza. Harrington finished a tic-tac-toe play on what appeared to be a broken penalty corner to earn the score. The ball came originally from Strout to the top of the circle. Jessica Campbell tracked down the bouncing ball two yards outside of the circle and fired it back in. Strout snagged it before it crossed the end line on her backhand and flipped the ball to Harrington, who tapped it over the line.
“The goalie went right to Angel, and the ball cam over to me,” Harrington said. “It was wide open.”
Harrington capped the scoring with a goal of her own less than five minutes later, finishing a feed from Whitney.
Devon Brewer stopped six Waynflete shots to earn the victory in the cage for Lisbon. Briana Moore relieved Brewer in the game’s closing minutes, but did not face a shot.
The No. 3 Greyhounds will face XXXXXX in the Western Class C semifinal round on Saturday.
