RUMFORD —  Mountain Valley High School vice principal Chris Decker has announced the Students of the Term. Every six weeks, teachers at Mountain Valley High School select a student from each class to honor. The freshman recipient was Abby Parent. Stephanie Cushman was chosen from the sophomore class. Junior Adriana Gorham and senior Cam Welch rounded out the students honored. The students received a MVHS T-shirt and a gift certificate to Dunkin Donuts.

Students and staff applauded the award winners and their parents or family members joined the students on stage.

In explaining the award, Decker said that faculty members nominate the students for “good work in the classroom, though not necessarily just for academics.” He compiles a list and then the faculty members vote.

Decker noted to the students that “the list keeps getting longer so that means that a lot of you are doing the right things and earning your teachers’ admiration.”

During the same school-wide assembly, Decker presented two special awards to Taylor Carey and Devon Hamel. He called them the Golden Rule Award. He read from the award a quote from Aristotle, “We should behave to our friends as we would wish our friends to behave to us.” The recognition was given for “honorable behavior…kindness, courtesy and respect of self and others.” The students received a MVHS T-shirt and a gift certificate to Dunkin Donuts.

Decker said, “These young men saw inappropriate student behavior and they intervened in the situation. They did it without being asked. They simply did the right thing in the moment.”
