WILTON — Selectmen unanimously agreed Tuesday to send a letter to School Board members prior to next week’s vote on where to hold Mt. Blue High School basketball games.

While giving his quarterly report, Recreation Director Frank Donald indicated the Recreation Department’s basketball programs could be affected if the Academy Hill School gym is chosen as the site. With home games scheduled on Tuesdays and Fridays and practices on other days, Donald thought the gym would only be available three days a week from 5 to 7:30 p.m. for Wilton youngsters involved in the rec programs.

“It’s their school. School programs comes first,” he said, but the town has had use of the gym long before it was SAD 9. Donald said he has met with Mt. Blue athletic officials to discuss the potential use if the board decides to use Academy Hill instead of the south campus gym in Livermore Falls.

If the Wilton site is chosen, Donald told the board he would do the best he could to continue the recreation programs for the younger players.

Selectman Tom Saviello made a motion to send a letter, written without taking sides on the issue, stating the importance of the Recreation Department programs to the town, a program many of the Wilton members of the Mt. Blue team participated in themselves when they were younger players.

The board also discussed and wanted to mention any potential costs to the town for extra police to handle traffic and parking issues on game nights.

“It’s too bad for RSU 9 kids to have to go two towns away when we have a floor the quality of the Academy Hill School,” Selectman Paul Gooch said. He explained how years ago he had tried to encourage coach Jim Bessey to play at Academy Hill because it does have the best floor.

The board asked Town Manager Rhonda Irish to draft the letter.

The board also reviewed a draft version of a revised Recreational Parks and Facilities Use Policy.

Some items are generally understood but had not been written down, Irish told the board, which agreed to bring the policy before residents and plan a public hearing.

Copies of the draft are available at the Town Office and will be added to the town website prior to the public hearing.
