CHESTERVILLE — Margaret Ruth Durdin, 83, of Chesterville, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 18, at her daughter’s home in Chesterville, where she had been residing since January.

She was born on May 13, 1928, in Camden, Tenn., a daughter of William W. and Kate P. (Vineyard) Wheeling. She attended a one-room schoolhouse in the Liberty community of Camden, Tenn.

In 1942, she married Max Wade in Camden, Tenn. He died in 1963. In 1970, she married George Durdin, who predeceased her in 1971.

Before settling in Maine in 1982, she lived and worked in several states in a variety of health and hospitality positions. Here in Maine, she served as the matron at Eighty Main Street, now known as the Pierce House, for several years.

In her retirement, Margaret volunteered at the Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington for 17 years, where she made many lifelong friends. She also loved to cook for family and friends, especially the southern dishes for which she was famous.

She is survived by her children, Virginia Murphy and her husband, Frank, of Big Sandy, Tenn., Maxine Platt and her husband, Dale, of Chesterville and William Wade of Big Sandy, Tenn.; grandchildren, Melissa Williams and her husband, Richard, of Industry, Barry Platt of Chesterville, Nathan Platt and his wife, Karen, of Farmington, Cheryl Murphy of Big Sandy, Tenn., Carol Murphy of Old Saybrook, Conn., Katherine Stream and her husband, Brian, of Crystal Lake, Ill., and James Wade and his wife, Faith Ann, of Windsor, Colo.; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Christine Weeden of Pontotoc, Miss.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen in 1952; and five siblings.
