RUMFORD — Rumford Hospital’s second annual Diabetes Fair is set for Saturday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. in the Specialty Clinics on the second floor of the hospital. The fair is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Featured speaker will be Ted Kaufman, a member of the sanofi-aventis A1C Champions Program, which is a patient-led approach to diabetes education. He will share his diabetes self-management and lifestyle strategies based on his training and personal experience with diabetes. Kaufman will make presentations at 10 and 11:30 a.m. and will be available throughout the fair to chat with participants.

Dr. Stephanie Youd of Elsemore Dixfield Family Medicine will talk about diabetic standards of care and answer participants’ questions at 11 and 11:30 a.m. She recently completed her residency at the Central Maine Medical Center Family Residency Program and joined the medical staff of Rumford Hospital in September.

Dr. Jeffrey Lynds from Swift River Family Medicine will be on hand throughout the fair for one-on-one discussions of medications with fair participants who bring their medications or their medication lists. Jane Wardwell, registered dietitian, will talk about dietary issues with an emphasis on how people who live alone can satisfy the requirements of a diabetic diet.

Barbara MacGregor, RN, certified diabetes educator and certified wound nurse, will perform foot exams. Fair participants who want this service will sign up at the registration desk when they enter the Specialty Clinics.

Representatives from EZ Diabetic Supplies, NovoNordisk and sanofi-aventis will display diabetic equipment and supplies. River Valley Healthy Communities Coalition will offer tips on growing and preserving locally grown food.

Flu shots will be offered to fair participants who register at the desk. This is not an open flu vaccine clinic but offered only to people with diabetes and their loved ones who accompany them to the fair.

Door prizes for the fair include exercise tapes, a fall swag created by Carolyn Bennett, a bicycle light from Dyer’s Electronics, a pedometer from Carlisle’s and Vitamin B from Red Hill Foods.
