DIXFIELD — Police Chief Richard A. Pickett asked selectmen Monday to make his proposed ATV policy an ordinance so it can be enforced by officials.
Pickett presented the policy to selectmen last month, saying its purpose was to allow ATV riders to safely obtain fuel and other services while giving local law enforcement guidelines. Among its provisions is a ban on ATVs on town property, except for a few listed roads to access ATV trails and fuel services.
Last week, Pickett met with members of the River Valley Riders ATV Club to discuss the policy. He described the meeting as productive and said a lot of questions were raised.
At Monday’s board meeting, an unidentified man said he was concerned that the town didn’t have trail heads and the new policy may hinder people from using the trails.
Selectman Stephen Donahue agreed, adding the town had a lot of people using ATVs and it brings money into town.
Pickett also requested that selectmen consider putting a clause in the ordinance prohibiting dirt bikes on town roads.
In other news, selectmen accepted a bid of $4,000 from New Realty of Auburn for the tax-acquired property at 1 Dix Ave.
Selectmen had previously decided to add a clause to the deed stating the property would need to be cleaned up.
Selectman Malcolm Gill said the property had been an eyesore and an issue for the town for years.
