AUGUSTA — George E. Richardson, 88, of Wayne, died Sunday, Oct. 23, at the Maine Veterans’ Home. 

He was born in Lynn, Mass., May 14, 1923, the son of Walter E. and Hazel (Brown) Richardson. George spent his summers in Wayne as a child and graduated from Lynn English High School. He entered the U.S. Navy shortly after graduating and served during World War II.

After the war, George purchased land on Pocasset Lake in Wayne and moved there to live and build his business. He built 24 camps on the lake, which became Richardson’s Cottages. He also was a building contractor in Wayne during those years. During the winter months, George built boats and later, beach chairs as his hobby. He was an accomplished craftsman.

George started the Richardson Beach Association for all his subdivision members on the Lord Road. He also was instrumental in the start of the Pocasset Lake Association and was the first president. He was the Wayne dam keeper for many years. After retiring from building, he wintered for several years in Florida. George was an avid water skier, having taught dozens of people to ski and, himself, skiing up to the age of 69. He was an active member of the Winthrop Rotary Club for more than 40 years.

He is survived by his wife, Joan (Whitney) Richardson; his daughters, Debra Duplisea and her husband, Fred, of Wayne and Karen Bryant and her husband, Wayne, of Wayne; his stepsons, Russell Dodge and his wife, Janice, of New Sharon, Stephen Dodge of Wayne and Richard A. Dodge of Portland; his grandchildren, Jeffrey, Sara, Jeremy, Tyler, Jessica, Jenna, Joanna, Joshua, Dawn, Zebulon, Rochelle, Rosalie Kathryn and Sam; as well as many beautiful great-grandchildren.

Mr. Richardson was predeceased by his first wife, Janet (Oliver) Richardson; his brother, Charles Richardson; and his sister, Grace Bish.
