LEWISTON — The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society will wrap up its participation in the national $100K Challenge this weekend with a 14-hour adoption event.
The “Canine Cat!-astrophe Adoption Event” will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday. Throughout the day, all adult cats and dogs will be free, and all puppies and kittens can be adopted for a discount. All animals will have been spayed or neutered and micro-chipped, and will be up to date on shots.
The shelter will stay open until midnight or until all available dogs and cats have been adopted, whichever comes first.
For the past three months, the Humane Society has participated in the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals’ $100K Challenge, a national competition to increase the number of cats and dogs adopted or returned to their owners. The Lewiston shelter won a spot in the contest earlier this year when 5,300 voters supported its entry. Fifty animal shelters across the country are competing. The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is the only one in Maine.
The shelter has so far found homes for 1,100 cats and dogs, making it eligible to win $300,000 in grants, including a $100,000 grand prize for saving the most cats and dogs, overall. The shelter has already won a $5,000 grant for saving the most animals in a month.
Although the shelter will participate in the $100K Challenge through Monday, Saturday’s adoption event will be its last large event before the end of the competition.
