University of New England women’s soccer forward Alice Read of Auburn (Edward Little) has been named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference honorable mention all-conference team.

Read scored two goals during the conference schedule, and her three assists in that span tied for fifth among the league leaders.

UNE finished 8-0-1 in league play, winning its first regular-season title in 11 years.

BONUS BOOT

Ben Russell of Farmington (Mt. Blue) scored the game-winning goal in double overtime for Maine Maritime Academy in a 1-0 win Saturday at Thomas.

It was a quarterfinal game in the North Atlantic Conference. The win advanced the Mariners to a semifinal date against top-seeded Husson.

The goal was Russell’s team-leading sixth goal of the year and his third game-winner.

WALL OF DENIAL

Kristen Capen of Leeds (Leavitt) stopped a penalty stroke by the University of Maine at Farmington’s Lily Barry, boosting Husson to a 3-2 win Saturday in the NAC field hockey tournament.

Capen was tremendous in goal with 23 saves for the Eagles, who battled the Beavers through 70 minutes of regulation, 30 more minutes of 7-on-7 overtime and one other round of penalty strokes before the game-winner.

Jessica Martin of Winthrop scored a goal for Farmington.

HELPING EAGLES SOAR

Ahmed Abdirahman of Lewiston registered an assist for Husson in a 4-0 men’s soccer victory over Colby-Sawyer, helping the Eagles clinch the North Atlantic Conference regular-season title.

It was the second helper of the season by the sophomore fullback.

AT YOUR SERVICE

Lewiston‘s Chantalle Lavertu is 6-1 in fall singles tennis for the Bowdoin College women.

Lavertu swept her four matches at the Bowdoin Invitational on the weekend of Oct. 15-16 in straight sets, losing a total of only three games in the last three.

Earlier in the autumn, Lavertu defeated opponents from No. 2 Amherst and No. 24 Wellesley. Her only loss was to Rebecca Curran of top-ranked Williams.

DOUBLE DOUGHNUTS

Kat Rothe of Leeds (Leavitt) made six saves in goal to help the University of Southern Maine secure a 0-0 tie with neighboring Saint Joseph’s College in women’s soccer this past week.

It provided one of the season highlights for USM (2-10-2) and represented the first scoreless tie in the 24-year history of the Huskies’ annual game against St. Joe’s (7-4-5).

Rothe has served up three shutouts this season.

LEADERS OF THE PACK

Kailey Bubier of Auburn (Hebron) and Whitney McDaniel of Livermore scored both Southern Maine goals in a recent 2-0 field hockey victory over Fitchburg State.

Bubier leads the Huskies with seven goals and three assists. McDaniel’s fourth goal of the season tied her for second on the team.

The two have combined for five of USM’s eight game-winning goals.
