LEWISTON — Police released details Monday about a Saturday shooting that sent a Massachusetts man to the hospital.

Kenneth Sales, 21, of Roxbury, Mass., suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his abdomen at 8:42 p.m. Saturday in front of 81 Bartlett St., according to Lt. Mark Cornelio.

Police said Sales was shot at three times. His assailant is at large. Police have no suspects, Cornelio said.

Neighbors described hearing 5 or 6 gunshots just before 9 p.m. Saturday evening.

“I heard it: pop, pop, pop!” said Linsey Stilkey, who lives in an apartment at 81 Bartlett St.

Stilkey was home alone when the shooting occurred, and ran to the back hallway as soon as she heard gunfire, she said. When she looked out her window a few minutes later, she saw nothing, she said. But police later removed a bullet from her her living room window frame that faces Bartlett Street.

Other neighbors said that Sales walked about half a block to 124 Pine St., where he collapsed on the steps. Police and EMT crews found him there 10 or 15 minutes after the shots, the neighbors said.

Police closed off Bartlett Street and sections of surrounding streets while Sales was loaded into an ambulance, said Don Walsh, who was was nearby at Webb’s Market on Pine Street at the time of the shooting.

Sales appeared to be the primary target in the shooting as he walked along the street, police said.

He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center for treatment. A spokeswoman could neither confirm nor deny Sales was a patient at the hospital Monday.

The incident remains under investigation, Cornelio said.
