BROCKTON, Mass. — Richard W. Cogswell Sr., 82, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, Oct. 27, at Norwood Hospital. He was the loving husband of 61 years of Helen A.”Cuddles” (Nickerson) Cogswell, whom he met in the seventh grade in 1942.

He was born in West Bridgewater to the late Norman and Mary (Keating) Cogswell. He was a lifelong resident of the town. Mr. Cogswell’s mother passed away when he was four days old and Richard was lovingly raised by the late George and Emma Perry. He was a 1947 graduate of the former Howard High School in West Bridgewater and was employed for many years from the former Brotherhood Oil Co. in Brockton as a service manager and technician, from which he retired.

Mr. Cogswell was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean Conflict and proud to be an American. He was a member of the American Legion East Bridgewater Post, the West Bridgewater Historical Society and the Cogswell Family Association. He enjoyed collecting old oil lamps and lanterns, as well as U.S. license plates and milk bottles from West Bridgewater.

A well respected and loved person, Richard is survived by his wife, Helen A. (Nickerson) Cogswell of Brockton; a daughter, Kendra L. Newton and her husband, Lawrence, of Sumner; a brother-in-law; many sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a son, Richard W. Cogswell Jr.; a sister, Lucille Winton; two brothers, Robert and John Cogswell; half brothers, Norman, Peter, Paul and David Cogswell; and his foster brothers, William and George Perry.
