Twin Cities voters will go to the polls Nov. 8 to elect 15 School Committee members in Lewiston and Auburn, providing one more Auburn candidate is found.
In two of Auburn’s School Committee races, there is no name on the ballot.
There is a write-in candidate for one of those seats, one of the two at-large posts. That write-in candidate is Laurie Tannenbaum of 36 Lake St., School Superintendent Katy Grondin said Wednesday. Tannenbaum has agreed to serve for the seat now held by David Das, the committee chairman. Das is not seeking re-election.
There is no write-in candidate for Ward 1, which is now served by Lane Feldman, who is not seeking re-election. Ward 1 represents the neighborhoods of the East Auburn and Washburn elementary schools.
“We’re still hopeful that someone who has thought about serving will step forward,” Grondin said. Serving is a commitment, she said, with meetings twice a month, more during budget meetings. But it’s an exciting time to be on the committee with new initiatives that will transform the delivery of education to students, Grondin said.
Often people will run when directly asked, she said, adding that’s how Das first began serving. Some people may not run out of concern they don’t know enough to serve, but that knowledge isn’t necessary, Grondin said.
New members are given one-on-one, orientation meetings informing them about new initiatives and school financing. “We want them to feel comfortable in that role.”
When voting for any write-in candidate, voters have to write the name and address of the candidate as well as checking the box or filling in the arrow. Anyone interested in becoming a write-in candidate for Ward 1 can file at the City Clerk’s Office at Auburn Hall. They need to be a registered voter and a resident of that ward.
In other School Committee seats, only one ward is contested.
Newcomer and local Realtor Beth Favreau is challenging veteran member Bonnie Hayes for the Ward 2 seat. Ward 2 represents the Washburn/Park Avenue school neighborhoods.
In Ward 4, which represents the Fairview/Sherwood Heights school area, another new candidate, Tracey Levesque is seeking office. Levesque was among those who staunchly opposed the committee’s vote last spring to give all kindergarten students iPads. After the committee decision to give out iPads, which took the community by surprise, Levesque co-founded Auburn Citizens for Responsible Education. She is running unopposed, filling the void left by Susan Gaylord, who is not seeking re-election.
In Ward 5, the Sherwood Heights/Walton schools neighborhood, Lawrence Pelletier is seeking election. Pelletier is a former committee member who lost to Connie Mercier in 2009. Mercier served one term and is not seeking re-election. Pelletier regularly attends School Committee meetings and is often the only person there who doesn’t have to be.
In Ward 3, the Park Avenue/Fairview schools area, veteran Tom Kendall is seeking re-election, as is Francois Bussiere, who as an at-large member represents the entire city.
