NORWAY — A downtown sewer line break over Bird Brook last month cost the town $10,000, Town Manager David Holt said.
The line under the Quartz Bridge over Main Street was installed in 1964. Officials believe something shifted, causing it to break. No raw sewage escaped from the pipe and no one in the area was affected by the Oct. 19 break, Sewer District Superintendent Shawn Brown said at the time.
Holt said crews from McGee Construction of West Gardiner, who were doing other sewer construction work in town, helped out. The Ted Berry Co. of Livermore, which does pipe lining and expansion, was also in town assisting on the Water Street sewer pipe project and helped at the site.
Holt said Berry’s pipe lining/expansion work is a relatively new technique that was used to repair the break under the Bird Bridge and at a sewer line issue on Winter Street. It is a less expensive and effective process, he said.
