TURNER— The storyline for the Leavitt Hornets has pretty much been the same all season long. The Hornets score early and keep the throttle open as they race away from their opponents with lopsided victories.

Friday night was no different as the Hornets scored on their first four offensive drives and rolled to a 47-22 win over the Hampden Broncos in an Eastern B semifinal game.

Jake Ouellette ran for 144 yards and a score, while Ian Durgin rushed for 77 yards on just four carries and caught four passes for 96 yards. The senior slot man also scored the first two touchdowns.

“They’re a good football team,” said Hampden coach Harry McCluskey. “They deserved to win tonight and it wasn’t even close.”

The Hornets (10-0) moved the ball quickly downfield on their opening drive, traveling 65 yards on just five plays. A Ouellette 22-yard run set up a 35-yard scoring strike from quarterback Jordan Hersom (6-of-10 for 152 yards). Hersom looked toward Ouellette in the flats and drew two defenders up, leaving Durgin wide open.

“They bit on it and it worked just as planned,” said Durgin.

A few minutes later, Ouellette ripped off a 49-yard run on the left side of the line to start the second scoring drive. Two plays later it was Durgin zipping around the right end for a 30-yard touchdown.

“We have fast linemen,” said Durgin. “They like to pull and they make it easy for me.”

After the Hampden (6-4) offense stalled, punter Tyler Norris boomed a 49-yard punt which settled down on the Leavitt 1. With the Hampden defense thinking safety, Leavitt coach Mike Hathaway had his team going for the jugular.

Hersom stepped back toward the back of the end zone and lofted a 40-yard pass to Durgin down the middle.

“We knew they were going to come with the blitz,” said Hathaway. “It was actually a safe call and a pretty easy read for Jordan. We had Ian open on the seam.”

“I figured we were going to pound it out,” added Durgin. “Coach has confidence in us and let us throw.”

Hersom then hit Brian Bedard for a 35-yard completion to the Bronco 24. Two plays later, Hersom kept the ball himself for an 18-yard score.

Leavitt kept the offense racing up the field early in the second quarter. A 13-yard pass to Durgin on fourth down near midfield was soon followed by a 26-yard scoring pass to Bedard in the right-hand corner of the end zone for a 27-0 lead.

The Broncos finally got on the board on their next drive with halfback Logan Steward (18 carries for 163 yards) scoring the first of his three touchdowns on a 13-yard run up the middle.

That momentum was short-lived as Ouellette banged his way into the end zone from two yards out late in the half to put the Hornets up 35-7.

Steward would scamper 52 yards for a score out of the Wildcat formation on the first offensive play of the second half, but the Hornets answered with a 58-yard scoring drive moments later. A 23-yard run by Ouellette helped set up Hersom’s second rushing score of the game, this one coming from 14 yards out.

Later in the third, Hersom tossed his third touchdown pass of the game on a pop pass over the middle to senior Oscar Rodriguez.

Once again, it was too much offense for the Hornets’ opponent to handle.
