AUBURN — Roland E. Lachance, 71, of Auburn, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Nov. 6, at his home.

He was born in Lewiston, Sept. 30, 1940, the son of Clifford and Blanche Cameron Lachance. A lifelong resident of Auburn, he graduated from Edward Little High School in 1958, and attended Bentley College in Massachusetts.

He was employed for the past 19 years at American Concrete Industries and at the time of his death was controller of the company. Previously, he was employed at New Fab Inc., Miller Industries, and Hannaford Brothers in South Portland, where he met his beloved wife of 45 years, Betty Ann (Johnson) Lachance.

Roland was an active volunteer in the Auburn community for many years. He was a member of the Lewiston-Auburn Jaycees, the East Auburn Community Unit, the Auburn Park and Recreation Advisory Board, and Edward Little High School’s Grandstand Club.

Roland also served as the president of the Maine Chapter of the Bentley College Alumni Association. One of Roland’s biggest passions was Little League Baseball, where he served in various volunteer positions for more than 25 years, including president, past president, treasurer, player agent, manager and coach with Auburn Suburban Little League.

In addition, he served as assistant district administrator and district administrator for the state of Maine Little League. Most recently, Roland was treasurer of the West Auburn School Historical Society.

Roland will be remembered most for his devotion to his family. He adored his children and grandchildren, sharing his love of sports and the outdoors with them every chance he had. He was often found working side by side with his son, Rollie, as a crew member on his stock car racing team.

He shared a love of country music and fishing with his daughter, Kathy, and enjoyed playing and attending sporting events with Jen, especially golfing. He particularly relished playing with his grandchildren and watching them grow.

He also liked snowmobiling, playing board and card games at family gatherings, and believe it or not, doing yardwork. Roland enjoyed many sincere friendships, some lifelong. All will greatly miss his sharp wit and dry sense of humor.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three children, Roland “Rollie” Lachance Jr. and wife, Laura, of New Gloucester, Kathryn Robitaille and husband, Daniel, of Lewiston and Jennifer Oliva and husband, Ted, of Portland, Conn.; his mother of Auburn; four grandchildren, Rachael and Ryan Lachance and Nico and Brooks Oliva; a sister, Carolyn Gaspar and husband, Charles, of North Berwick; and a brother, Richard Lachance and wife, Marie, of Liverpool, N.Y.
