RUMFORD — The Rumford American Legion Post 24 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1641 are planning an event for Veterans Day at Mountain Valley High School.

Veterans will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the school’s cafeteria. The group will be escorted into the school gym by the commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Gerald Francis, and the commander of the American Legion, Kirk Thurston.

The Legion will be conducting its 13-fold flag ceremony during the event. Each fold has a significant meaning.

The third fold, which is in remembrance of veterans who gave a portion of their life for the defense of the United States to attain peace throughout the world, holds significance for Veterans Day.

“Memorial Day celebrates deceased veterans. Veterans day is to celebrate those still living who gave service,” Thurston said. “To me, everyday is Veterans day.”

A lunch will follow the ceremony at the VFW hall at noon. All veterans and families are invited.
