JAY — The buzz of conversation and laughter could be heard from outside the kitchen Thursday morning at St. Rose of Lima Parish Hall.

There were 11 women busy making pies or cleaning up.

Members of the Daughters of Isabella were making pumpkin and apple pies for the Knights of Columbus free supper from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at the Knight’s hall on Route 4 in Jay.

Member Rita Crowley has organized past baking efforts by calling around to see who was interested in participating and the desserts and breads have been made at each individual’s home.

Regent Denise Rodzen said she suggested the group effort because she thought it would be fun and it could be a mass production. Some members still chose to cook at home.

“We were supposed to make 24 pies but now we’re making more,” she said.

The Knights donated apples and pumpkins for the pies.

It took three women to pour the pumpkin-pie mix into a pie shell and keep it neat.

The group made 17 pumpkin pies.

Elaine Castonguay, with help from others, moved slowly as she placed each of the pies into the oven to bake.

The women started making more pie crusts for the apples that had been peeled, while others washed dishes and utensils.

The women said they had enough for more than a dozen apple pies.
