Pride, courage, strength and reliability make up the qualities of an American soldier. From the perspective of a grandson whose grandfather served in Vietnam, there is not enough respect in the world to give to those who fight for our country.
While the proud citizens of America sleep soundly in the nights, our soldiers are alert, aware and prepared to defend our country from all enemies, foreign and domestic. The proud men and women of the United States military dutifully protect our liberty without rest, without the guarantee of their own safety, and without the comfort of their families.
There is no greater sacrifice than to put oneself in harm’s way for the freedom of one’s country, yet our soldiers endure this on a daily basis for the good of our nation.
These men and women, these role models, do not take the gifts of life for granted. From the moment they enlist, to the moment they are put to eternal rest, their lives are enveloped in national pride and patriotism. Whenever the Pledge of Allegiance is recited, or the National Anthem performed, they are the first ones to hold their hands over their hearts, and the last to remove them.
American soldiers express the United States; values, not only amongst their fellow citizens, but all across the globe. Thousands of miles away, amidst their newfound brothers and sisters of the military, these individuals show the people of other countries the strength and unity of America. This proves that the job of our military is not only to engage terrorists or foreign enemies in battle.
Soldiers aren’t the only people who represent our nation globally. Olympic athletes also represent the United States in other countries. However, there is a major difference between these two types of Americans. Athletes are remembered for the great ability they possess to excel in their sport. Soldiers however, are seldom remembered by anyone besides friends and family. The fact that they live for America and not for themselves sets them apart from everyone else.
What truly matters is the knowledge that America’s military carries the pride and dignity of America on its shoulders wherever it goes. The people who make up our military pass on to us their strong will and determined attitude. When you make a poor decision, they remind you that you aren’t letting anybody down but yourself. They preach that you should show pride not only in your work, but in your family too.
Showing that you are being the best person you can be and working the hardest you can work is what proves most important in life. After all, hard work is what Americans stand for. Hard work and, of course, patriotism.
Members of our military make up the roots of American pride. From these brave men and women we are shown what it truly means to be an American. They teach us that putting our nation before ourselves and showing all citizens the respect we wish to be shown are the key traits of a true patriot.
This is what my grandfather passed on to me. May God bless America and all those who fight for her liberty.
