ORONO, Maine (AP) — State Rep. Jon Hinck of Portland is announcing his candidacy to be the Democratic nominee in next year’s U.S. Senate election for the seat now held by Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Hinck is the second Democrat to enter the race. His announcement Saturday at the University of Maine at Orono sets up a 2012 Democratic primary against Matthew Dunlap, a former state representative and secretary of state who announced his candidacy last week.

The 57-year-old Hinck is an attorney and environmental advocate who says Snowe “has lost touch with Maine.”

Snowe has been a senator since 1995. She is facing a primary challenge from two tea party-affiliated candidates, former congressional candidate Scott D’Amboise and conservative activist Andrew Ian Dodge.
