BRUNSWICK — Selma S. Blatt, 96, formerly of Perkins Ridge Road in Auburn, died peacefully Sunday, Nov. 13, surrounded by her children.
She was born in Lewiston, April 28, 1915, the daughter of Jacob and Goldie Aronson Shapiro. Educated locally, she was a graduate of Edward Little High School, Class of 1932, and Bates College, Class of 1936; she then taught at the Lewiston Junior High School for several years.
On June 25, 1939, she married Arthur G. Blatt, who passed away on Aug. 7, 2005. After raising four children, she went back to work as a substitute teacher at both the Lewiston and Auburn high schools. A former member of the Beth Abraham Synagogue, she belonged to the Temple Shalom Synagogue, was a past president of Hadassah, and was active in the Sisterhood of Beth Abraham. In later years, she was a member of Beth Israel Congregation in Bath, along with her children.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan and husband, Jeremy Fields, of Freeport; three sons, Stephen and wife, Lynn, of Cumberland, Charles and wife, Robin, of Newton, Mass., and Gordon and wife, Monica, of Brunswick; a brother, Sherman G. Shapiro of Worcester, Mass.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Leah Weinsier and Helen Bean; and a brother, Ernest M. Shapiro.
