LIVERMORE FALLS — RSU 73 directors learned Thursday that delayed-start days at the Spruce Mountain High School campuses are being used differently than initially proposed.

In September, the board approved having 13 days for students to either come in an hour later or arrive on the bus at regular time and participate in a supervised activity, including tutoring.

The plan was modified a couple of weeks after that to reduce the amount of class time missed and cut the number late-start days to 12.

Initially, the days were to be used so teachers at Jay and Livermore Falls high schools could get together to work on becoming a team in anticipation of having a consolidated high school campus.

Recently, it was modified again so teachers would work together at their own campus and save travel time, Jay high school Principal Gilbert Eaton told the board.

Staff knows they are still at least a year out from consolidation, he said, due to neither high school not having enough space to accommodate all students. It would take about 18 months to build an addition on to either school to fit the full student body.

Once the Spruce Mountain High School Leadership Team decided to modify the delayed-start proposal, the board should have notified the board, Chairwoman Denise Rodzen of Livermore Falls said.

She said it makes her a little leery about the next time administration comes forth with a proposal that they could modify after the board approves it.
