HEBRON — The Hebron Historical Society recently hosted Civil War reenactors Richard and Marcia Cylik at the October meeting held at Hebron Town Hall.

Dressed in a blue Civil War uniform that the typical Private would wear, Richard explained each article of the soldier’s clothing and demonstrated the importance of each piece of his gear, including backpack, provisions and musket. It was interesting to note that replacement socks and other similar articles were often sent from home via U.S. Mail, and that these packages would indeed find their way to the soldier — even when in the field.

Marcia, dressed in more formal attire, indicated that the dress she was wearing would have been worn when going out, for example, to the market. Complete with gloves and bonnet, it was hard to imagine a woman being comfortable in such garb on a hot summer day, though Marcia did indicate that it was possible. She further explained that when a husband was called off to war, the woman would be left behind with all the responsibilities of the home: farm, family, chores, etc.

The program presenter for the Tuesday, Nov. 22, monthly meeting will be Bette Ann Cushman, of Hebron, who will speak on graphology, the science of using a person’s handwriting to determine personality and character traits. The signatures of famous people from the past will be analyzed. Cushman, a director of the society, has been trained in this field. The program will follow a short meeting held at the Hebron Town Office starting at 7 p.m. The public is invited.
